So how do we do it? ElecTemistry™ and HydroZap™ are systems that use electrochemical treatment to remove contaminants from water sources. This is also known as electrocoagulation and can be used effectively on both inffluent and effluent streams. Prior to this technology, expensive, dangerous, and sometimes toxic chemicals were used to remove contaminants from waste water. Electrochemical treatment uses electricity, providing a safer system and more effective results. This process is generally used on industrial waste streams to create a reusable water source or healthy discharge of the water source. If other treatments are used, electrochemical can be used a pre- or post-treatment, adding a polished finished.
What is electrocoagulation?
Electrocoagulation utilizes electricity as the electromotive force to drive chemical reactions in a solution, suspension, or emulsion. A direct current is introduced into the water source as it passes between predetermined electrodes in the system module. The energy from the electricity is the engine-or driving force-that provides a mechanism for removing dissolved, suspended, or emulsified molecules.
It can also remove elements or ions to the very minute levels. The modules are constructed with either iron or aluminum materials. We have done thorough analysis on numerous materials, finding that iron and aluminum both provide the elements needed for electrocoagulation to be successful. They are both a high quality, cost-effective, and conductive materials that are widely available. These non-toxic materials have demonstrated proven results in a wide variety of contaminants.
What Our Technology Does
Electrochemical treatment can precipitate dissolved heavy metals by a combination oxidation reduction reaction that in many cases produces oxide crystals that are very stable.
Some of the heavy metals we can target include:
- Hexavelent Chromium
- Copper
- Lead
- Zinc
- Nickel
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Molybdenum
Some of the metals will require an anion to be present to form a precipitate, which can typically be added very easily. Other contaminates can be targeted with the process, such as oil, bacteria, and phosphates. Electrocoagulation will break oil emulsions and release the tied up emulsified oil to float to the surface, where it can be skimmed off with a vacuum and recovered if viable.
ElecTemical™ and HydroZap™ systems provide the electrochemical force to drive reactions to remove complex ions such as phosphates, silicates, and carbonates. The subsequent reaction will form insoluble precipitates or harmless by-products. When targeting bacteria and algae, electrocoagulation overwhelms bacteria when crushing pressure is exerted by the attractive force of the electrons toward the nucleus of the bacteria cell. This crushing pressure causes bacteria and cysts to be eliminated from aqueous steams.
What Our Technology Will Not Do
Electrocoagulation does not remove infinitely soluble materials such as sodium chloride or potassium compounds or sugars, as it cannot form an insoluble precipitate of these compounds. It also does not remove miscible liquids such as alcohols, glycols, or soluble gases. Electrocoagulation works best on aqueous streams of one per cent solids or less. When enhanced with polymers, electrocoagulation can sometimes handle as much as five per cent solids if the treated effluent is centrifuged.
